#Trump demands UN reimpose Iran sanctions

Washington and the United Nations are in a showdown after the Trump administration demanded all member countries restore nuclear-related restrictions on Iran by Saturday and the conventional arms embargo on the rogue regime stay in place, Reuters reported.

Three of America’s strongest allies — Britain, France and Germany — told the UN Security Council on Friday that they wouldn’t reimpose the sanctions, leaving them open to a threat by the president that the US would impose restrictions on any nation that violates the arms embargo if that measure is allowed to expire in a month.

“We have worked tirelessly to preserve the nuclear agreement and remain committed to do so,” the UN envoys for the three countries told the Security Council in a letter.

Trump will sign an executive order reimposing the US sanctions in the coming days, an unidentified source told Reuters.

The UN Security Council lifted the sanctions and set an expiration date for the arms embargo in 2015 after Tehran agreed to stop developing nuclear weapons. The restrictions are all related to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, including a halt to research and development and a ban on all imports that could foster those activities. The arms embargo has been in place since 2007 and is set to end Oct. 18.

Two years ago, the president pulled out of the deal struck by Obama. Last month, Washington told the UN that Tehran had breached the pact because the US was no longer part of the agreement and had imposed unilateral restrictions to push Iran to strike a new pact.

After the White House complained, Indonesia — acting as the Security Council president for August, announced it wouldn’t take a position on the US request to reimpose sanctions because there wasn’t agreement among the member counties.
