San Francisco Mayor London Breed slammed a “reckless” and “selfish” crowd of over 1,000 people who partied at a city beach Saturday night in a pop-up Burning Man celebration.

“You are not celebrating. You are putting people’s lives at risk,” Breed pointedly tweeted about the revelers at Ocean Beach near Golden Gate Park. “You are putting our progress at risk. No one is immune from spreading the virus.”

Saturday’s celebration coincided with what would have been the 34th year of Burning Man, the infamous art-and-music gathering outside Reno, Nev. The festival this year was cancelled over coronavirus concerns.

Breed warned people to stay away from Ocean Beach on Sunday night, closing the beach’s parking lots in a bid to deter another party. The mayor added that police would be patrolling the beach.

“We know people love Burning Man & people want to get together this weekend. But we all need to do our part. Stay home, stay safe,” the mayor wrote.
