#Rescuers help deer trapped in Long Island batting cage

The buck stopped at home plate.

Wild video shows animal rescuers coming to the aid of a Long Island deer that got its enormous antlers stuck in a backyard batting cage Friday night.

Armed only with flashlights, Frankie and Erica of the Strong Island Animal Rescue League were called to the Port Jefferson home to free the scared animal, according to the organization’s Facebook post.

Footage of the two minute rescue shows Erica being tossed to the ground by the buck as she tried to pull him by the netting in to shorten the slack on the batting cage ropes.

As the 250 pound-plus animal tried to thrash his way to freedom, Frankie began cutting the net around his antlers.

As progress was being made, the deer wrapped the netting he was still attached to around a bush.

Frankie continued to cut, freeing the stunned deer, who paused to get his bearings before tearing away with such power that he flattened a stockade fence on his way to safer pastures.

Strong Island Animal Rescue League says the intense ordeal left Erica and Frankie “gasping for air” and “sore” and in awe of the “sheer size and power” of their suburban neighbor.

The Port Jefferson homeowner took down the batting cage for the winter.
