It’s been a while since I’ve done a first impression on a new manga that I am reading. I’ve been busy working on my own manga but once in a while, I like to dabble a bit in my downtime. Hence, I stumbled upon Ragna Crimson, this action-packed dark fantasy about a boy who wants to slay all dragons.

The dragon hunter Ragna embarks on a revenge-fueled quest to eliminate that threat once and for all!

Dragon hunters: warriors armed with special silver weapons who kill their prey for bounty. Lowest among their ranks is Ragna, who forms an improbable partnership with the young genius Leonica, a master dragon slayer with more kills to her name than almost any other. All Ragna wants is to stay by Leonica’s side, but his dream is shattered by an attack from the deadliest dragon imaginable…

It’s very captivating for a story about hunting dragons but nothing original so far. I say this because, I have read so many stories about people hunting dragons, and/or overpowered MC washing everybody in one shot. If you’ve read any manwhua or webtoon, then you’ll realize this very quickly and if you enjoy those types of stories, you’ll be well at home.

However, there’s something about Ragna Crimson that caught my interest. The MC wasn’t likable to me at first. His weird dynamic with Leo kinda made me want to drop the manga initially. I couldn’t tell how old he was in comparison to Leo, who is clearly a child so I felt weird when he showed this intense compassion for a child like that. However, once he got his future-self powers, and parted way with Leo, the story for me got interesting as his new companion, Crimson, a Dragon King who wants to kill all dragons, including himself made the story interesting. Ragna wants to kill all dragons, not to save the world but to prevent Leo from dying. It makes sense for his character and is quite simple, Crimson, on the other hand, is shrouded in mystery so finding out why he’s doing what he’s doing will be fun to learn. It’s like that demon in Black Clover that hates other demons, but I feel like there’s more to him than that.

The combat and fight scenes are very well choreographed and flashy, so there’s lots of expressive action on the panels to feast on. In this world, Dragons have a weakness in sunlight and silver aura, and the only way to kill them is by freezing them with that silver aura emitted by a silver sword or cutting them into pieces and letting them burn in the sun. The silver aura the future Ragna gave present Ragna basically turned his body into a living weapon which is cool to see in action.

The visuals are pretty good, sometimes hard to follow but nothing you won’t get used to with time. As for the pacing, well we got right into the action but I for one like the somber moments when characters talk about their ambition and see them take the path to accomplish it. Also learning more about the world and powers is also something that I like to see them take time to explain so I’m good with that. Overall, I enjoyed the chapters that I read and would recommend this to anyone looking for something new to read.
