#PS5 Shortages Until 2022, Says Sony

According to reports, Sony expects low PlayStation 5 production to remain in 2022, with 14.8 million units sold by the year’s end.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki is said to have informed analysts that PS5 scarcity is predicted until 2022, according to Bloomberg.

The continued demand for PS5 consoles has become ever more complicated to meet due to worldwide supply problems of semiconductors. Semiconductors are a critical component of the PS5 design, and supply disruptions have caused setbacks in the console’s development.

Sony has initially stated that it intends to beat the PS4’s second-year revenues of 14.8 million units. Challenges with the specific chips required could prevent this. Sony would prefer to match, if not outperform, the PS4’s early sales, but that appears to be growingly difficult at this time.

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan stated in April that the company was hoping to boost PS5 availability. He also revealed that he was in talks with chip manufacturer AMD. It appears that those talks have yet to bear fruit, as evidenced by these latest developments.

It’s unfortunate news for those seeking to get a PS5, as availability appears to be outstripping supply for the immediate future. Even after these setbacks, the PS5 is now the fastest-selling gaming system in the United States. Recently, Sony’s PS5 has consistently outsold both the Xbox Series X/S in both device and revenue.

PS5 Games

There haven’t been many blockbuster games for the PS5 that demand the investment of the device. The majority of its release games were also playable on PS4, apart from maybe more niche games like Demon’s Souls.

Sony earlier noted that Horizon: Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok would be released this year, but both are expected to be postponed until 2022. Sony is still planning exclusive games like GhostWire: Tokyo, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and Deathloop for 2021. As well as cross-platform classics like Call of Duty and Battlefield for 2021.
