“Peaky Blinders Season 6: Who is Jack Nelson?”

The sixth season of Peaky Blinders premiered on February 27th and brought viewers back right into Thomas Shelby and the crew’s criminal lives. While we did catch up on the familiar faces, the first episode of season six also introduced some new faces. One, in particular, is Jack Nelson, Gina Gray’s uncle. It’s pretty clear right from the get-go that this is an important character moving forward.

So, the question on everyone’s mind – who is Jack Nelson? What is he up to in this season? Let’s settle that curiosity by talking about everything we know about this Jack Nelson character.

Jack Nelson is Gina Gray’s (Anya Taylor-Joy) powerful uncle and her husband Michael Gray’s (Finn Cole) boss in the United States. In the show, he’s been portrayed as a character with many political connections and has a sizeable import-export business. In the season 6 premiere, he’s referred to as ‘Uncle Jack.’ In this episode, we find Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) meeting with Nelson’s associates to talk about a potential business opportunity after the Prohibition ended back in the United States.

After the meeting went down badly, Shelby tricked Michael Gray into carrying opium and then got his cousin locked in the prison by tipping off the cops. Determined to get his business offer heard, Tommy approaches Gina with the business opportunity with Jack Nelson but yet again gets rejected. However, Shelby threatens to do business with the Solomons family in the US instead – Jack Nelson’s rivals.

At the end of the episode, we catch Tommy visiting Michael. He reveals that Jack Nelson, his wife, mistress, son (and friend of President Roosevelt), and Gina would all be going to London to do business, leaving Micheal enraged. Shelby had previously teased that Nelson’s hidden past and high-society connections have made him an influential figure who has to keep this public image clean.

Who Is Playing the Role of Jack Nelson?

With the premiere episode itself, it’s clear that Jack Nelson will be an enigma this season on Peaky Blinders. It’s again clear from the same episode that he and Thomas Shelby will have a lot of interactions as the season progresses. But, despite so much importance given to this character in this episode, he isn’t actually on it. So, fans are yet to see who Jack Nelson is and which actor will be playing him.

Thankfully, this is not some mystery. James Frecheville will play Jack Nelson. As reported by Express UK, Frecheville is a 30-year-old Australian actor and is best known for his role as Joshua “J” Cody in the 2010 Australian movie Animal Kingdom. His character was the youngest member of a criminal family. So, we guess that his experience of playing the role of a criminal may serve him well on Peaky Blinders too.

The report also stated that Finn Cole, who plays the role of Michael Gray, portrayed the role of “J” in the TV series adaptation of Animal Kingdom. The actors will now reunite in this season of Peaky Blinders and maybe even have a ton of scenes together, especially considering Frecheville will be playing the role of Gina’s uncle.

Who Is Jack Nelson Based On?

Though Jack Nelson is meant to be a fictional character, Steven Knight, writer of Peaky Blinders, took inspiration from a real-life person – Joseph P. Kennedy (1888 – 1969). He is the father of U.S. Senator Bobby Kennedy and the 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy. There are quite a few parallels between the real-life and reel life characters. For instance, like Jack Nelson, Joseph Kennedy imported English liquor to the U.S. in the aftermath of Prohibition. After, he traveled to London with a similar group, like Nelson in the series.

Steven Knight affirmed that Gina was “a Kennedy” to Den of Geek before clarifying, “No! I mean, I’m not giving that away so soon. As ever with Peaky [Blinders], you look at history, and you take real facts and fictionalize them. There is a resonance with Boston, with senior politicians.”

The Kennedys resided highly close to the Mitford family from 1938 to 1940 in the United Kingdom. The showrunners have roped in newcomer Amber Anderson, and she is set to play Lady Diana Mitford, Oswald Mosley’s wife. Also, it seems like Lady Diana Mitford and Jack Nelson will have a storyline later in the season together. Again to Den of Geek, Knight confirmed that he purposely set up a connection between Oswald Mosley, the Mitford family, Gina Gray’s family, and Sir Winston Churchill.

You can watch Peaky Blinders series six on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
