Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

2020 has been a wild year for a multitude of reasons, but one winner of the past 12 months is manga sales, which are up this year over 2019, even looking past Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba's record-breaking 82,345,447 physical copies sold. Oricon has once again over the last year compiled the data revealing the top series sales and the top volumes sales, which includes the fact that One Piece has fallen to third in the rankings for the first time in over a decade.

Note: These rankings are only estimates from Japan's top data collection agency based on physical sales, digital sales are not included. The data is compiled from November 18, 2019, to November 22, 2020.

Top 5 by series:

1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (82,345,447 copies)

2. Kingdom (8,251,058 copies)

3. One Piece (7,709,667 copies)

4. Haikyu!! (7,212,099 copies)

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba also pulled off the feat of being the most sold book in Japan over the last year, with Demon Slayer: Flower of Happiness selling 923,139 copies being the first series ever in Oricon history to hold the manga and book top spots. Demon Slayer is also the most-watched film in Japan this year, with its theme song "Homura" ranking highly on the charts. With over 82,000,000 collected volumes sold, Demon Slayer has had the best selling year ever for a series, decimating One Piece's 2011 yearly sales record of 37,996,373 copies sold. All in all, 2020 was the year of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Other interesting notes from the findings is that JUJUTSU KAISEN ranked in the top 10 (though Oricon only revealed the top 5 this year) for the first time year with a very impressive 6,702,736 copies sold, while Haikyu!!, which finished its serialization earlier this year, jumped up to 4th on the chart with a spike of 7,212,099 copies sold, just 500,000 copies shy of One Piece.
