During Netflix’s TUDUM 2023 event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a new teaser trailer for the upcoming One Piece live-action TV series was released, which also revealed a worldwide premiere date of August 31, 2023.

Cast members Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar were present at the TUDUM event and debuted the teaser trailer worldwide for the first time. They play Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, respectively.

Other cast members for the show consist of Peter Gadiot as Shanks, Morgan Davies as Koby, Alexander Maniatis as Klahadore, Steven Ward as Mihawk, Craig Fairbrass as Chef Zeff, Langley Kirkwood as Captain Morgan, Celeste Loots as Kaya, and Chioma Umeala as Nojiko.

Netflix’s One Piece TV series is a co-production with Tomorrow Studios, who produced the live-action Cowboy Bebop series and other shows like Snowpiercer and Let The Right One In. Steven Maeda (Pan Am) and Matt Owens (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Luke Cage writer) are the showrunners, with Owens also serving as scriptwriter.

Eiichirou Oda’s original manga series was first launched in Shuiesha’s Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997 and published under the Jump Comics label. A total of 105 tankoubon volumes have been released as of March 2023.

The manga has inspired a 1999 OVA from Production I.G and a long-running anime TV series from Toei Animation that began in 1999, which passed the 1000th episode mark on November 21, 2021. The 15th One Piece anime film, One Piece Film Red, premiered in Japan on August 6, 2022 and ended its run as the country’s eighth highest-grossing film. It is also currently the sixth highest-grossing anime film in the world.

VIZ Media releases the One Piece manga in English and describes the story as:

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
