#Once in a blue moon! Rare dazzling meteorites hit the auction block

A rare collection of stunning, platinum-hued meteorites hit the auction block this week — offering bidders a chance to take home the cosmically cool space rocks.

Seven of the jagged metallic pieces —  some of which broke off from asteroids and soared to Earth thousands of years ago — are up for grabs at Christie’s “Deep Impact” online auction until Aug. 25.

“[It’s] an abstract, otherworldly conversation piece from the asteroid belt,” Christie’s Auctions says in a description of one 4-by-6-inch meteorite, which is expected to fetch up to $5,000.

The most expensive piece is a foot-long “gun metal-hued” iron meteorite found in the Kalahari Desert — that’s expected fetch up up to $80,000.

“Originating from the asteroid belt and shaped by forces both extraterrestrial and terrestrial, meteorites almost never look like this sculptural form,” Christie’s says of the piece, dubbed the Gibeon Meteorite.

The meteorites — some of which originate from the moon or Mars — are displayed mounted on platforms, like molded sculptures.

A chance to buy them comes only once in a blue moon, the auction house said.

“Although there are more than 64,000 meteorites in the world’s collections, two-thirds of these will never be available to the general public. And the resource is barely growing: each year there are only five or six fresh falls,” the company’s website states.

Other up-for-grabs space rocks include a ridged one shaped like the continent of South America, which is expected to sell for up to $12,000, and another covered in a rust-colored crust.
