#Jacob Blake needs ‘miracle’ to walk again after shooting, lawyer says

It would take “a miracle” for Jacob Blake to walk again after being shot by Wisconsin police, a family lawyer said during an emotional press conference Tuesday — as his mother pleaded for peace following two days of violent unrest stemming from the incident.

“It’s going to take a miracle for Jacob Blake Jr. to ever walk again,” attorney Ben Crump said. “He is currently in surgery as we speak, still struggling to sustain his life and to hopefully regain some resemblance of the man he once was.”

Bullets fired by a white police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday penetrated Blake’s stomach and severed his spinal cord, the lawyers said, adding that most of the 29-year-old’s colon and small intestine had to be removed.

“They shot my son seven times,” the wounded man’s father, Jacob Blake Sr., said through tears. “Seven times, like he didn’t matter. But my son matters. He’s a human being and he matters.”

His family is demanding that all three cops at the scene be kicked off the force and that the unidentified officer who fired at least seven shots into Blake’s back be arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Crump said the family plans to file a civil lawsuit against the department and will take part in a march in Washington, DC, this week seeking justice.

Blake’s mother, Julia Jackson, said her son doesn’t seem to remember what happened and remains critically ill.

But Jackson also called for peace after two days of violent protests over her son’s death that has destroyed much of the city’s black business district.

“As I was riding through here, though this city, I noticed a lot of damage,” she said. “It doesn’t reflect my son or my family. If Jacob knew what was going on as far as that goes, the violence and the destruction, he would be very un-pleased.

“So, I’m really asking and encouraging everyone in Wisconsin and abroad to take a moment and examine your hearts,” she said. “Citizens, police officers, firefighters, clergy, politicians, do Jacob justice on this level and examine your hearts.”
