A mix of international students and those coming from state-designated coronavirus hot-spots are arriving this week — two weeks earlier than usual to allow time for their mandatory 14-day quarantine, according to NYU Spokesman John Beckman.
“This week marks the start of the measured, careful, gradual return of students to NYU’s campus, which the University is doing in line with a thoughtfully developed and extensive health and safety plan that stresses safety, academics, and flexibility,” Beckman said in a Wednesday statement.
The early arrivals are only permitted to leave their dorm rooms for medical visits or to collect their three daily meals from the hallway.
In two weeks, students from the tri-state area will arrive on campus.
NYU, like most universities and colleges, nixed in-person classes last semester and switched to remote learning over coronavirus concerns.
The university in May indicated students would be able to come back this fall.
Whether NYU can successfully carry out in-person classes for the semester remains to be seen.
Other major universities across the country, including the University of Notre Dame and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill had their plans to hold in-person classes foiled after campus-linked coronavirus outbreaks.
