#NYC still passing laws as if the pandemic didn’t change everything

“#NYC still passing laws as if the pandemic didn’t change everything”
Starting in 2024, the law hammers owners of commercial and residential buildings with huge fines if they fail to slash energy use and carbon emissions. City Councilman Costa Constantinides (D-Queens) gloats that the law requires “the largest carbon emissions reduction ever mandated in any city.”
Properties bigger than 25,000 square feet must upgrade to energy-efficient boilers, windows, etc. to serve the goal of cutting greenhouse-gas emissions 40 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050.
And never mind that it’s one more reason to move to Florida — or not come back from wherever you’ve fled — since the law socks co-op and condo owners, too. Nor that countless landlords can’t remotely cover their own expenses, with many tenants opting not to pay rent and vacancies soaring.
It’s time to stop adding new burdens to a city economy that’s struggling just to survive.
