Kaitou Queen wa Circus ga Osuki (“The Phantom Thief Queen Loves the Circus”, also known as Mirage QUEEN aime cirque), a children’s novel series written by Kaoru Hayamine and illustrated by K2 Shoukai about an adventurous phantom thief who travels around the world in an airship, is being adapted into an original animation video for its 20th anniversary.

Aside from the logo above, no further details (such as the cast, the crew, and the release date) have yet been revealed for the project. The newly announced OAV marks the first time that the Kaitou Queen literary series will be adapted into a different visual medium since its publication began in March of 2002. An official website and Twitter feed (@miragequeen_) have also been created for the project.

The cover features an Asian man in a martial arts uniform, an androgynous person dressed in noble's clothing flourishing a playing card, and a sinister looking masked harlequin.

Published in Japan by Kodansha under their Aoitori Bunko imprint, the Kaitou Queen series follows a mysterious phantom thief of unknown age and gender who travels the world in an airship and steals whatever they please. In the first novel, the Queen runs afoul of a traveling circus when they both target the same precious jewel, and the circus members – such as illusionists and hypnotists – use their special talents to compete for the prize.

The latest entry in the series, Kaitou Queen – Purgatorio Ginka to Ushinawareta Shiro (“The Phantom Thief Queen – The Gold Coin of Purgatory and the Lost Castle”) will be published in Japan on July 14, 2021.
