NBA history changed when Steve Kerr chose to coach the Warriors, instead of the Knicks, in 2014. Now, Kerr’s associate head coach is interested in leaving Golden State for New York.

Former Cavaliers and Lakers head coach Mike Brown, Kerr’s right-hand man since joining the Warriors in 2016, is interviewing for the Knicks’ head coaching position, according to The Athletic. Brown, 50, will be the 10th candidate to be interviewed by new Knicks president Leon Rose, but just the fifth with previous head-coaching experience, including frontrunner Tom Thibodeau, former Nets coach Kenny Atkinson and former Knicks coach Mike Woodson.

Prior to winning two titles with the Warriors, Brown — who also won a championship as an assistant with the Spurs in 2003 — led Cleveland to five playoff appearances in five seasons with LeBron James, which included a trip to the 2007 NBA Finals and Coach of the Year honors in 2009. Despite winning the most regular-season games in the league in back-to-back seasons, Brown was fired by the Cavaliers in 2010. He lasted just 71 games leading the Lakers, then returned to Cleveland for another season and another firing in 2014.

Brown most recently led a team when he stepped in as Golden State’s head coach during the 2017 playoffs, leading the team to 12 straight wins before Kerr returned from his back injury.

The Knicks interviewed 11 candidates in the 2018 coaching search, which resulted in David Fizdale’s hiring.
