#Michigan legislative offices closed Monday over ‘safety concerns’

Michigan state legislative offices will be closed Monday due to safety concerns as presidential electors are expected to cast their vote in the state Capitol for President-elect Joe Biden, a new report said.

“Due to safety and security concerns, the Senate and all Senate spaces in downtown Lansing will be closed Monday, December 14,” the Senate notification said, which was obtained by The Detroit News.

The state House is only allowing staffers “needed” in the Electoral College vote to go to the Capitol, according to its notification.

The government office closures were recommended by law enforcement, said Amber McCann, a spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey.

Without elaborating, McCann said the decision was based off “credible threats of violence,” and not anticipated protests, according to the report.

Biden won Michigan by 154,000 votes, claiming the state’s 16 electoral votes.
