#Mets’ Luis Rojas: Wilson Ramos ‘our catcher’ — for now

Tomas Nido started behind the plate for the Mets for the third time in their past six games on Tuesday, but manager Luis Rojas said the team didn’t have a catching platoon. At least for now.

“Wilson Ramos is still our catcher,’’ Rojas said before the Mets beat the Marlins 8-3 in Miami.

Rojas indicated Ramos would be back in the lineup Wednesday.

“Tomas Nido has been doing a great job the last few games that he’s gotten the chance,” Rojas said. “He’s been getting a couple more games in the last week, but there’s nothing like a split there yet. Wilson is still our starting catcher.”

It’s easy to understand why the Mets would consider a change. The offensive-minded Ramos has struggled at the plate, with just four extra-base hits and an OPS of .574 in 75 plate appearances heading into Tuesday. And his defensive miscue helped cost the Mets a game in Philadelphia on Friday, when Ramos was late in tagging Roman Quinn on a throw from Michael Conforto that had the runner beat for the winning run.

And Nido, clearly the superior defender, had hit well this season, with a hit in all six games he’d appeared in prior to Tuesday, though he went 0-for-4 in the win.

As the son of longtime major league player and manager Felipe Alou, Rojas said he saw the merit in the argument on both sides of the debate surrounding San Diego star Fernando Tatis Jr. swinging away at a 3-0 pitch Monday night against the Rangers with the Padres already up by seven runs.

“I was raised in the game in the traditional way, where the unwritten rules were always respected,’’ Rojas said. “At the same time, I understand both opinions. The number of runs [ahead], I respect all that. Right now, I’ve seen a lot of big innings also get built up easy and quick, so it’s almost like there’s no comfortable lead.”

His primary concern, Rojas said, was about what might happen as a result of those types of plays.

Texas right-hander Ian Gibaut threw a pitch at Manny Machado following the Tatis homer and on Tuesday received a three-game suspension he was appealing. Rangers’ manager Chris Woodward was suspended for one game, a ban he served Tuesday night.

“What I can say is when you’re out there and somebody either runs in a one-sided game or swings like this on 3-0, there are some emotions on the field that you can’t control,’’ Rojas said. “Me as a manager, I can’t manage some of the emotions these guys can have in an instant. That’s where it can become delicate. That’s where somebody can get hurt [with] people throwing at each other. It can really develop into something else. You don’t know who lives by just the traditional unwritten rules in the game in the middle of the game.”

Jeff McNeil was back at second base on Tuesday, with hot-hitting Robinson Cano, who went 1-for-5 with another double, serving as the DH.

McNeil, who went 0-for-4, was the DH Monday after pinch-hitting Sunday. He missed two games over the weekend after sustaining a bone bruise in his left knee.

Before the game, Rojas said McNeil felt good and his knee was healthy enough to play defense. And Rojas also wants to let Cano DH on occasion.

“We want to get Robbie a breather since we’re easing him into playing him more and more on the field,’’ Rojas said.

Rojas added he wanted to keep Dom Smith in left field, which is why McNeil was at second.
