#Mets’ bats comes through again in takedown of Marlins

Though the Mets’ starting rotation is in tatters, the offense has come to life in two straight wins in Miami.

After slugging four homers in Monday’s win, the Mets hit three more Tuesday in an 8-3 victory over the Marlins.

The day started with another injury to a starter, this time to David Peterson, who was scheduled to pitch Tuesday but woke up with his shoulder feeling “weird,” according to manager Luis Rojas. Corey Oswalt came off the taxi squad to take Peterson’s spot, and three relievers combined to toss 3 ²/₃ shutout innings before Edwin Diaz’s struggles resurfaced in the ninth.

Diaz, coming off six straight scoreless outings, allowed a run on three straight hits before finishing the game with three consecutive strikeouts.

“We feel like we have a lot of talented guys that can step in this role and we’ve just got to grind out these games,’’ Dom Smith said before the game. “Just keep fighting. We don’t want to lose a beat here. We want to keep the momentum going and try to help out our pitchers.”

They did it again Tuesday, sparked by three RBIs from Amed Rosario and three hits from Brandon Nimmo.

A day after their bullpen was taxed following Robert Gsellman’s brief outing Monday, the Mets relied on Oswalt, making his first start since 2018. The 26-year-old pitched well enough to get into the fifth inning, and the Mets’ bullpen pitched well again.

The lineup took some pressure off, as Nimmo got the Mets on the board in the top of the third with a two-out solo homer to right-center.

The Mets added a pair of runs in the fourth, the first with a leadoff blast by J.D. Davis. Michael Conforto walked and moved to second on a single by Pete Alonso.

Smith continued his hot stretch with an opposite-field, ground-rule double to drive in Conforto and make it 3-0.

The Mets failed to add to their lead when Rosario grounded out hard to third and Tomas Nido flied to deep center.

The Marlins got back in the game when Oswalt faltered in the bottom of the inning.

Oswalt retired nine straight between Jesus Aguilar’s leadoff single and a Matt Joyce double with one out in the fourth.

Aguilar followed with another double down the line to score Joyce and make it 3-1. After Corey Dickerson popped out, Brian Anderson’s single plated Aguilar to cut the Mets’ lead to a run. Oswalt got into further trouble when he hit Francisco Cervelli, but then got Logan Forsythe to ground out to end the inning.

The Mets squandered another scoring chance in the fifth, when Nimmo led off with a triple, but switch-pitcher Pat Venditte stranded him by retiring McNeil, Davis and Conforto.

Justin Wilson replaced Oswalt with one out in the bottom of the inning and Magneuris Sierra on second, but the lefty got the next two batters. Wilson then gave way to Jared Hughes in the sixth, and Hughes got through that inning and the seventh without allowing a run.

Rosario’s leadoff homer in the seventh gave the Mets a 4-2 lead, and he added a two-run single in the eighth, when the Mets put the game away with four more runs.

“Once again, it’s another challenging thing for us in the season with the starting pitching,’’ Rojas said before the game. “But I’m gonna say again, the depth has helped us bounce right back and keep going with our plan.”
