That’s what “Platinum End” is about
Short assessment
Ohba and Obata are a talented mangaka duo, as they have already proven with “Death Note”. With their latest work “Platinum End” (which has since been completed), they have only underlined this statement once again.
«Platinum End» goes in the same direction as «Death Note», plays in a darker setting and also puts the focus in a more strategic direction again. However, the series focuses more on action and direct confrontations and manages to inspire in this regard as well.
As in «Mirai Nikki», the point is that a game of life and death is staged, from which a winner emerges who is convened as the new god. In «Platinum End», however, you don’t fight with diaries, but with wings and red and white arrows, and whoever uses them strategically best can prevail against the opponents.
Here, too, the procedures and motivations of the 13 aspirants to God are of the most varied nature and range from power, rebirth, selection to world peace.
The series is consistently exciting and, like “Death Note”, will appeal to and captivate a large audience. Along with the very strong animations and good dubbing, it’s a pretty good anime series overall, made even more compelling by the action focus in moving image form. The anime also strictly follows the manga and is completed in 24 episodes, of which only 20 are available in original subtitles and 14 in dubbed form.
For me, however, it cannot quite tie in with the masterpiece «Death Note». I’m missing a bit of depth and philosophical statement. Nonetheless, «Platinum End» is definitely worth a look!
