Plot:

Beautiful costumes, elegant movements, hard training. Middle school student Tatara Fujita has no idea about the fascinating world of dancing – until one day by chance he ends up in Kaname Sengoku’s studio. The professional dancer persuades Tatara to give a free trial lesson. He is skeptical at first, but then quickly discovers his passion for waltzes, tango and the like. After watching in amazement as his classmate Shizuku floats across the floor, the desire also grows in him to take part in dance tournaments. Now he knows what he wants to do with his future in order to successfully assert himself against the strong competition, but he still lacks a lot of basics, experience – and of course a suitable dance partner!

My conclusion:

I can’t really say that I have dealt with dance in more detail before – and like me, many probably feel like it. Nevertheless (or maybe because of it) “Welcome to the Ballroom” was a very entertaining pleasure for me.

The series accompanies the initially rather inconspicuous Tatara on his way from a total beginner to a talented dancer. In typical ganbatte fashion, he always has to overcome new athletic, but also interpersonal obstacles. The audience gets to know the fascinating and intimidating world of tournament dance together with Tatara. The process is explained in the anime, so that you don’t need any previous knowledge of the sport.

In my opinion, the protagonists are interesting and well carved out. By the end of the series, I had grown fond of them. Even with the less lovable characters, their past is told by looking back, so that you get a bit of an understanding of their behavior.

In terms of animation, it may take a short time to get used to it. Especially the exaggeratedly long necks and some facial expressions can put you off at first sight. The dances are often shown in still images, since a continuous animation would have consumed a huge amount of budget. In my opinion, the series can make up for that in terms of content. After one episode, I always wanted to watch the next one.

All in all, I can warmly recommend “Welcome to the Ballroom” to those who don’t like sports. To get an idea for yourself, you can watch the anime, for example, in the legal stream of Anime on Demand or Crunchyroll.
