After being in Japanese theaters for a little less than a month, Makoto Shinkai’s latest anime film Suzume has finally debuted in the top 100 films at the Japanese box office (which includes both domestic and international films) at 87. The latest box office figures for the film let it reach this milestone with Suzume set to travel much further up the list.

As of December 4, Suzume has brought in 7.6 billion yen (US$54.89 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of 5.61 million tickets sold. The anime film took over the first Spider-Man film’s spot and is just 30 million yen shy of overtaking Zootopia.

For reference to Shinkai’s other two major films, Weathering With You is 14th on the Top 100 rankings and Your Name is in 5th place. Suzume is still outpacing Weathering With You’s box office takings, but Weathering With You still has Obon’s takings to bring the Shinkai up with Suzume has the New Year to come, which historically hasn’t been as kind for films. 

Suzume is directed by Makoto Shinkai, who also penned the screenplay for the film alongside Masayoshi Tanaka as the character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya as the animation director and Takumi Tanji as the art director with animation production at CoMix Wave Films. 

Suzume was released in Japan on November 11 with Crunchyroll teaming up with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International to bring the feature to global audiences outside of Asia in early 2023.
