#Mahershala Ali Is ‘Excited to Get Going’ as Blade in the MCU

A new Blade will soon enough be brought into the MCU with Mahershala Ali playing the iconic character. In a new interview with Empire, the actor spoke about what it’s like to take on this role along with what’s to come. Before reading any further, be warned that there are major SPOILERS ahead for anyone not fully caught up on everything happening in the MCU, with one title teasing the arrival of a certain vampire slayer.

With that out of the way, many Marvel fans have now learned that Ali has now officially made his debut in the MCU as the new Blade. We don’t physically see the character, but his voice can be heard in a post-credit scene after Eternals, speaking to Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman. The role wasn’t credited, so it wasn’t outright clear to everyone who this person was, but director Chloe Zhao has confirmed that this is in fact Blade’s first appearance in the MCU.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

In his Empire interview, Mahershala Ali opened up on doing the voice cameo for Eternals. He explains that it was a “cool” experience, even if it was a bit scary. While recording his lines, Ali says he couldn’t help but feel excited about taking on the character, even if he was just doing the voice at this time. The feeling that he is going to play the new Blade is really sinking in, as explained in the interview.

“It was really cool, getting to do that [voice cameo]. It was scary. Because, you know, you’re talking before you’re filming it. I’m pretty particular about my choices, like most actors, and so having to make some choices – even with a line, vocally – this early on, it brought up some very real anxieties. And it made the job real. It’s like, ‘Okay, this is happening now’, you know, and that’s exciting.”

This was not just a taste of what to come for Blade with Marvel fans, but for Ali himself as well. He notes how Marvel has been dominating Hollywood in recent years and that getting to be a part of it is exciting as it is. It’s even more special to play such a popular character, and Ali feels himself getting more and more stoked for filming to start, teasing that we’re “getting there” soon.

“That Marvel world is obviously the biggest in film, and just to get my little introduction to that – starting with the Comic-Con a couple years ago, and now the very early stages of stepping into the shoes of that character – it felt special and really cool. I’m excited to get going and do more… We’re getting there. We’re getting close.”

It was previously announced that Stacy Amma Osei-Kuffour would pen the screenplay for the new Blade movie, which officially brings the vampire slayer into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios has not announced a final release date for Blade. For now, Marvel fans can catch the character’s introduction into the MCU by sticking around after the credits for Eternals, now playing in movie theaters. This news comes to us from Empire.
