“Michael Bay ‘Doesn’t Care’ About Will Smith’s Oscars Slap, Says Focus Should Be on Ukraine”
Michael Bay worked with Will Smith on two Bad Boys movies, but said he doesn’t care about the Oscars incident as other things are more important.
Michael Bay has worked with Smith on both Bad Boys and the 2003 sequel, Bad Boys II, so while he was not watching the Oscars ceremony as it happened, he said that his phone went haywire as things unfolded. Although Bay did explain that to him, the Will Smith people have seen at the Oscars is not the man he knows, Bay first made it crystal clear that Hollywood can sometimes become so lost in itself that nothing else seems to matter, which is wrong at this time. He said:
“First of all, it’s wrong to begin with, but that’s all people are talking about. And I don’t really care. Hollywood gets self-absorbed. There are babies getting blown up in Ukraine right now. We should be talking about that. I’ve worked with him, he is not that guy. I’ve never seen him lose his cool like that. I thought it was set up ’cause I saw the smirk, and I’ve been on set when Will screws with people, when he’s joking with people. Listen, it was a slap. It wasn’t a punch. He’s very good at fighting, he’s trained at that… But it’s wrong to begin with.”
Will Smith is Still To Find Out What Action The Academy Will Take Against Him
Although Will Smith has apologized profusely for his actions, and went as far as to resign from The Academy in the wake of last Sunday’s incident. However, The Academy have made it clear that even with Smith’s resignation, they will still be investigating the incident and may choose to take some form of action against him, although that would be is currently unclear.
Over the last week, the “moment of madness” from Smith has been repeated around the world in news coverage, as internet memes, and during interviews with other stars. Recently the subject even led to Mel Gibson cutting an interview short rather than being drawn into a discussion about whether he would have been treated the same way if it had been him. All in all, the incident has certainly brought a lot of attention to the Oscars, but for all the wrong reasons. While there was much to celebrate on the night, and other moments that should have been getting the headlines the next day, it is pretty certain that the only thing anyone is going to take away from the 94th Academy Awards is that slap.
