Yet, they extended their winning streak to four games because Jordan Montgomery, Chad Green, Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman dominated, and Luke Voit came through in the 10th inning with a sacrifice fly that lifted the Yankees to a 2-1 victory at Yankee Stadium.
Errors by third baseman DJ LeMahieu, left fielder Brett Gardner and Montgomery made it tougher, and though right fielder Mike Tauchman wasn’t charged with an error, he wrongly dove for a sinking liner in the eighth that got by him for a two-base hit by Ryan Mountcastle with two out.
However, they took advantage of having LeMahieu on second to start the 10th inning and walked away with a 2-1 victory thanks to Voit’s fly to center that scored LeMahieu easily from third.
After Chapman retired Renato Nunez on a harmless pop to short right field to start the ninth, Aaron Boone and trainer Tim Lentych went to the mound to check on Chapman, but didn’t stay long and returned to the dugout. Chapman struck out the next two batters, jogged off the field and headed down the tunnel behind the dugout.
After pitching poorly in the previous two starts, Montgomery allowed an unearned run (his error), three hits, one walk and struck out a career-high nine. Green worked 1 ¹/₃ innings, Britton a scoreless eighth and Chapman a perfect ninth.
With pinch-runner Andrew Velasquez on second to start the 10th inning against Jonathan Holder, Rio Ruiz’ grounder to the right side moved him to third. That forced the Yankees infield to play on the grass and the move worked when Cedric Mullins line to second baseman Tyler Wade for the second out. Holder ended the scoring chance by getting Hanser Alberto on a routine fly to left.
