As Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train creeps closer and closer to the all-time number one spot on the Japanese box office chart, the current holder, Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away, moved the goalpost today, with distributor Toho adding 880 million yen (US$8.45 million) to the films previous lifetime gross of 30.80 billion yen (US$296.1 million), now totaling 31.68 billion yen (US$304.2 million). The added figures come from theatrical screenings of Studio Ghibli films over the summer when cinemas were just reopening in Japan to help ease people into going back to the cinema.

Princess Mononoke also got an 880 million yen (US$8.45 million) update to its lifetime figures at the Japanese box office, which now totals 20.18 billion yen (US$193.8 million). This let Princess Mononoke overtake Howl's Moving Castle on the Japanese box office charts, upping it to the 4th highest-grossing anime film in Japan, and the seventh highest-grossing film in Japan overall. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind got a 730 million yen (US$7.01 million) update from screenings in 2020, while Tales of Earthsea got a 150 million yen (US$1.44 million) update.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train was on track this week to overtake Spirited Away at the Japanese box office, but with the updated figures for the Hayao Miyazaki film it seems the trains won't pass each other for another week. Mugen Train's current box office takings total 30.28 billion yen (US$290.8 million) compared to Spirited Away's now 31.68 billion yen (US$304.2 million).
