An extradition hearing for Kyle Rittenhouse, the Illinois teen charged in the shooting deaths of two protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was delayed Friday as the 17-year-old suspect’s lawyer claimed that his client acted in self-defense.

Rittenhouse did not appear for the brief proceeding in Lake County Circuit Court Friday where an Illinois judge agreed to postpone his extradition hearing to Sept. 25, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The suspected teen shooter requested to waive his presence at the hearing and to have more time so that he could hire his own legal team, according to the news outlet.

Rittenhouse will remain in custody in Illinois pending extradition to Kenosha.

“We also arranged for him to have a phone call with his mother this morning,” Jennifer Snyder, an attorney for Rittenhouse, said during the 10-minute proceeding, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Rittenhouse of Antioch, Illinois was charged on Thursday by Wisconsin prosecutors with six criminal counts — including first-degree intentional homicide and attempted homicide – for shooting dead two Black Lives Matter protesters in Kenosha and injuring a third person.

The shooting unfolded Tuesday during protests over the Sunday police-shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake in Kenosha.

Prosecutors charge that Rittenhouse, who was busted Wednesday, used an AR-15 to shoot and kill Joeseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and injure Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, during the protest.

One of the lawyers representing Rittenhouse is L. Lin Wood, an attorney who represented Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann in defamation lawsuits against media companies like CNN and The Washington Post.

Wood claimed Thursday that Rittenhouse had acted in self-defense.

“From my standpoint, it’s important that the message be clear to other Americans who are attacked that there will be legal resources available in the event false charges are brought against them,” Wood said. “Americans should never be deterred from exercising their right of self-defense.”
