The movie was released in Japan on December 25, 2020 after being delayed from its original Summer 2020 opening. It was first screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), which was held from October 31 to November 9, 2020.

Studio BONES is in charge of the animation production, while Eve is performing the movie’s theme song titled “Ao no Waltz” and insert song titled “Shinkai.” Josee, the Tiger and the Fish‘s staff includes Koutaro Tamura (Noragami) as director, Sayaka Kuwamura (Strobe Edge live action movie) as scriptwriter, Nao Emoto (O Maidens in Your Savage Season manga) as original character designer/comic adapter, Iizuka Haruko (Little Busters!) as character designer and chief animation director, loundraw (Tsuki ga Kirei) as concept designer, and Evan Call (Violet Evergarden) as music composer.

The short story inspired a 2003 live-action adaptation as well as a South Korean live-action adaptation titled Josée, which premiered on December 10 last year in South Korea. A manga adaptation by Nao Emoto also ran from January to October in Kadokawa’s Da Vinci magazine in 2020.
