Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will travel to the must-win state of Michigan on Wednesday, his farthest trip since securing the party’s nomination over six months ago.

Biden will deliver remarks in Warren, a suburb 30 minutes north of Detroit, focused on bringing jobs back to the US by taxing companies that ship work overseas and incentivizing those that do not.

In his speech, the former vice president will formally unveil his “Made in America” tax policy, which the campaign says will prevent offshoring and increase US employment.

The proposal will include an offshore tax penalty on goods made overseas and sold in the US, as well as a companion 10 percent tax credit for companies reopening closed facilities, bringing back offshored jobs or expanding payroll for manufacturing work.

In unveiling his plan Tuesday night, the campaign also said Biden would sign a series of executive orders in his first week as president to ensure the federal government is buying American goods and hiring American workers.

Following his speech, Biden will meet with United Auto Workers union members, Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.) confirmed to the Detriot Free Press on Tuesday, hailing Biden’s decision to come to his district.

“His decision to make Macomb County one of the first stops as he resumes in-person campaigning, to hear directly from UAW workers, shows that Biden understands the importance of this crucial county and the needs of our voters,” Levin said.

The event will be closed to the public, but available for viewing via livestream.

Biden’s plan echoes President Trump’s stance on offshoring, and is similar to Trump’s promise on Monday to “impose tariffs on companies that desert America to create jobs in China and other countries,” vowing as part of a second-term agenda to bring back jobs lost as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Michigan, a swing state with a major manufacturing presence from the auto industry, is not only getting attention from Biden.

Trump will visit the Wolverine State on Thursday, holding a campaign rally at the MBS International Airport in Freeland.
