#Jets’ Joe Flacco tried to make sense of brutal INT vs. Patriots

Backup quarterback Joe Flacco nearly led the Jets to their first victory of the season but came up short in the fourth quarter.

Flacco, starting his third game of the season in place of Sam Darnold, played beautifully for three quarters and then crumbled in the fourth. He had three touchdown passes in the game, but it is his fourth-quarter interception that will be remembered.

The Jets defense had just held the Patriots to a field goal and the Jets had a 27-20 lead with 6:00 left. Flacco took a deep shot, something that had worked all night for him. This time, Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson intercepted the pass intended for Denzel Mims, setting up the game-tying drive for the Patriots.

“It’s one of those obviously in hindsight I don’t want to throw that pick,” Flacco said, “but the safety on that side of the field kind of came down and cut the crosser and the corner was outside leverage and it was just one of those looks, with the cover-two safety on the back side of the field, I felt like I could throw down the hash and Denzel Mims, could beat the guy to the hash and catch that ball for the post. So, I’ve been rattling it around in my head and I don’t think I would have made a different decision in the moment, but obviously I wish I had that one back.”

When the Jets got the ball back with 1:51 left and the game tied at 27-27, Flacco and the offense sputtered. Flacco was sacked for the only time in the game on second down, effectively killing the drive. He then threw the ball away under pressure on third down. That gave the Patriots the time to set up the game-winning field-goal drive.

Flacco played much better in this game than his other two appearances. He was 18 of 25 passing for 262 yards and a rating of 128.7.

“There was a lot of good stuff,” Jets coach Adam Gase said. “He made a lot of really nice throws. For the majority of the game he did exactly what we needed him to do. It’s tough when you might have one or two errors and you don’t feel good about it. I feel like he played pretty good for the most part.”

During the game Flacco moved past Joe Montana into 20th place all-time in passing yards in NFL history.

The Jets made several roster moves before kickoff. They activated rookie CB Bryce Hall off of the non-football injury list. They signed QB Mike White off of the practice squad to serve as Flacco’s backup with Sam Darnold [shoulder] missing the game. They also elevated TE Ross Travis and DL Tanzel Smart from the practice squad and placed TE Trevon Wesco (ankle) on injured reserve. … CB Brian Poole left the game with a knee injury.
