#Jets cut Quincy Enunwa, officially end ties to Rex Ryan

The Jets released another of their longtime players on Monday, cutting wide receiver Quincy Enunwa.

The move comes a day after the team released guard Brian Winters, who wasn’t out of work long. The Bills are reported to be signing the former Jets guard.

Enunwa and Winters were the two longest-tenured players on the roster. Winters was drafted in 2013 and Enunwa was part of the 12-man 2014 draft class. The Jets now have no players left from any of their draft classes prior to 2016. Enunwa and Winters were also the last remaining players drafted by former general manager John Idzik and who played for former coach Rex Ryan. Both were fired following the 2014 season.

In addition to releasing Enunwa, the Jets announced inside linebacker C.J. Mosley was officially placed on the reserve/opt-out list. They also waived running back Trenton Cannon, offensive lineman Ben Braden and outside linebacker Wyatt Ray. Cannon was a sixth-round pick in 2018.

The moves bring the Jets roster to 80 players, meaning they can now practice as a full squad. The NFL required teams to have split-squad workouts if their rosters were above 80 players.

Enunwa, 28, had his career derailed by injuries. He suffered his second serious neck injury in three years during the Jets’ Week 1 loss to the Bills last year. He missed the rest of the season. Enunwa also missed the 2017 season with a neck injury.

The Jets already knew they would be without Enunwa this season as he had been ruled out months ago. The Jets still owe him $6 million this year, money that was guaranteed in the four-year, $36 million extension he signed in December 2018. In addition, he will receive $4.1 million of his 2021 salary that was guaranteed for injury.

Enunwa ended up playing just one game of the four-year contract that was handed out by former GM Mike Maccagnan. Enunwa ended up making $20 million on that deal and had one reception for (minus) 4 yards. The Jets do not get any salary-cap relief this year by releasing Enunwa.

Of the other players cut on Monday, Cannon is the most notable. The Jets drafted him in 2018, hoping he could be a kick returner and a gunner on the punt team. He was a favorite of special teams coordinator Brant Boyer, but he struggled to stay healthy. A foot injury limited him to four games last year. He is the second member of the six-man 2018 draft class the Jets have moved on from.

With Enunwa gone, the longest-tenured Jets are now linebacker Jordan Jenkins and defensive tackle Steve McLendon, who both joined the team in 2016.
