#Japan Box Office: Demon Slayer Mugen Train Falls to 2nd Place for The 2nd Time

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train earned 169 million yen (1.6 million USD) on 105,000 admissions in its 16th weekend, falling to second place in the weekend box office for the second time. The No.1 film of the weekend of January 30-31 was a live-action original romance drama Hanataba mitai na Koi wo Shita (We fell in love like a bouquet of flowers) starring Masaki Suda and Kasumi Arimura. No new anime films were released this weekend.

The last time the film lost its first place was its 13th weekend, when Gintama THE FINAL was released in Japan. It regained the number one spot again the following week, then had dominated the weekend box office ranking for another two weeks. The film's cumulative box office gross has reached 36.8 billion yen (350 million USD) so far and continues to break Japan's all-time box office record.

Gintama THE FINAL dropped to third place in its fourth weekend. The film has earned 1.3 billion yen (12.3 million USD) so far, already surpassing the total box office gross of the franchise's first feature film Gintama: The Movie ( 1.07 billion yen / 10.2 million USD). But at this point, it is hard to say if this third film will reach the box office record of the second film in the series, Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya (1.7 billion yen / 16 million USD).

The live-action film adaptation of Kaiu Shirai (story) and Posuka Demizu (art)'s dark fantasy shonen manga Yakusoku no Neverland / The Promised Neverland ranked eighth in its seventh weekend. The 118-minute film had made 1.8 billion yen (17 million USD) with 1.4 million ticket sales to become the third top-grossing live-action film of 2020 based on Japanese manga.
