It was hot enough this week in Arizona — where temperatures climbed to 110 degrees — to melt your shoes, according to first-person accounts on social media.
In one video, a protester in Phoenix is shown displaying the goopy soles of his Payless tennis shoes, which had fallen off after baking in the sun.
“Hey check this out. It’s so hot the soles of my shoes just melted right off,” the demonstrator, who was protesting against the death of George Floyd, says in a video posted on Twitter Thursday.
Some joked that he may have simply bought a “crappy product” — but other Arizona residents warned about similar shoe-sizzling incidents.
“Your shoes would probably melt to the pavement if you were strolling in my ‘hood right now because AZ summers = [fire],” another observer wrote on Facebook.
Their comments came as several wildfires — including a large one raging near Tucson — broke out across the state amid hot, dry and windy conditions.
