Starring alongside Cary Elwes in the romantic comedy, A Castle For Christmas, Shields plays Sophie Brown. As a well-established writer from the United States, she finds herself in the midst of a highly publicized scandal. To escape the aftermath, she travels to Scotland to see her father’s ancestral homeland. Since her father worked as a groundskeeper at Dun Dunbar Castle, she ends up spending a lot of time there where she meets Duke Myles. This feel-good film shows how Sophie warms the Duke’s heart, and the two fall in love. It has a very happy, pleasant ending and is a fantastic film for Shields’ repertoire.

Joining the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Shields portrays Sheila Porter who is the biological grandmother of Noah — the adopted son of the show’s main character, Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Although Sheila tries to convince Olivia that she is safe and stable enough to be in Noah’s life consistently, her facade falls apart quickly when she orchestrates a kidnapping. Hiring someone to stage Noah’s abduction, she hides him at a remote cabin owned by her sister. Eventually, Olivia and her team catch up to Sheila and rescue Noah. This very serious subject allows Shields to display her acting range from sweet grandmother to deceptive criminal.

Another interesting character that Shields plays well is Katherine “Kat” Young in the Lifetime TV series, Army Wives. As a Wing Commander and C-17 pilot, she holds her own in a military environment. Her brash personality and brilliant mind are evident in her initial introduction to the show as she clashes with the Army General. However, they eventually end up liking each other. Acting in five episodes, her character arc unfolds beautifully and is unlike any other she has played before.

In the television series, Lipstick Jungle, Shields portrays the president of Parador Pictures, Wendy Healy. The show follows the lives of three high-powered businesswomen who are all best friends. Set in New York City, audiences get a glimpse into their professional and personal lives. Taking over ER‘s spot on NBC after its 15-season series finale, the show was canceled after only two seasons. It wasn’t enough to replace one of televisions’ best medical dramas. However, it was a great opportunity for Shields to play a strong, independent character.

Joining the cast of the popular TV series, That ’70s Show, Shields plays Jackie’s mom, Pamela. As a real estate broker, she is a very busy woman, and that shows through her strained relationship with her daughter. Her numerous extramarital affairs lead to a divorce, and she even abandoned her family for a while by running off to Mexico. When she finally returns to reconnect with Jackie, she begins dating Bob, who is Jackie’s best friend’s father. Jackie and Donna (the best friend) hatch a plan to ruin their relationship, but they later decide to leave them be.

1 The Blue Lagoon

Based on the 1908 novel by Henry Da Vere Stacpoole, The Blue Lagoon is a controversial film that jump-started Shields’ career in front of the camera. Set in the Victorian era, two young cousins are shipwrecked on an island in the South Pacific. Being forced to grow up with no knowledge of puberty or adulthood, they have to experience the physical and emotional changes on their own. Emmeline becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son. Eventually, the two are found by the boy’s father, dead or unconscious, in a lifeboat that had drifted out to sea. The film was highly criticized by Roger Ebert and others, but it also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.
