#How Woody Johnson’s eventual return will affect Jets’ decision process

One big question that is looming over the Jets and their new head coach is: When is owner Woody Johnson returning from England and does he have a role in this hire?

Jets CEO and chairman Christopher Johnson has run the team since Woody became the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom in 2017. Christopher said Monday that Woody’s return date is still uncertain. He will remain the ambassador until Jan. 20 when Joe Biden is sworn in as president. But even when his brother returns, Christopher plans on playing a more active role in the organization than he did prior to Woody’s departure.

“I’m not going anyplace in this building. I’m still going to be here,” Christopher Johnson said. “There will be a fair amount of continuity. My role will be significant moving forward. But when he does get back, whenever that is, he will have the final say on decision-making. I’ll be an important adviser here and a big part of what happens here.”

As for the coaching search, Woody will not play an active role and will not be involved in the interviews. The expectation is that Christopher will keep Woody in the know as the search progresses. There is no doubt some coaching candidates will be worried about potentially having a new boss weeks after they are hired. The Jets are going to have to assuage those concerns.

Left tackle Mekhi Becton suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday’s season finale against the Patriots. Becton said his priority now is to get healthy and then he will begin training for his second season.

One of his goals is to lose weight. He began this season at 370 pounds.

“I’m going to get that down. I’m working on getting that down,” Becton said.

Becton suffered shoulder, chest and ankle injuries this season. He said he just thinks that is part of football. He wants to improve on some technique this offseason.

“To fix the little things that I need to work on, like technical things, get my football IQ up, learn the game more this offseason, just things like that, the little things that go unnoticed,” Becton said of his offseason objectives.
