Executive produced by Jason Katims (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights), Away is described as an emotional drama undertaking an epic scale by celebrating the advancements humans can make along with the personal sacrifices that accompany those achievements.
Premiering Friday, September 4, the series follows Emma Green (Swank), an American astronaut preparing to lead an international space crew on the first mission to Mars.
Along with facing the challenges of space travel, Emma will grapple with the decision to leave her husband Matt (Charles) and teenage daughter Lex (Talitha Bateman) behind at a time when they need her the most. While the crew’s journey into space proceeds, the dynamic between them becomes more complex as they experience life without their loved ones back on Earth.
Away was created by Andrew Hinderaker (Penny Dreadful); Jessica Goldberg (Parenthood, The Path) serves as showrunner alongside fellow executive producers Katims, Matt Reeves, Edward Zwick, Swank, Adam Kassan and Jeni Mulein.

Emma suits up with crew member Ram Arya (Ray Panthaki) who is a former Air Force fighter pilot from India. Unlike his fellow astronauts, Ram has fewer Earthly attachments.

Lu Wang (Vivian Wu), a chemist and astronaut representing China, takes the controls alongside Ram. Described as intelligent and pragmatic, Lu’s composed exterior is juxtaposed with her complex background as married woman with a young son.

Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir) lends some encouragement to Emma. The Russian cosmonaut and engineer is among the most experienced crew member on the mission. While he may have an ego, Misha also struggles with the personal sacrifices he made to be in space.

Misha, Ram and Kwesi Weisberg-Adebayo (Ato Essandoh) relieve some stress by taking part in a game of cards. Kwesi is a British citizen from Ghana who is good-humored and modest. Considered a man of deep faith, he is a botanist aboard the mission who hopes to grow life on the red planet.
