If you have any doubts about what kind of hate is acceptable in this town, consider Thursday’s City Council committee hearing on Intro 632, Majority Leader Keith Powers’ bill to ban landlords from asking about prospective tenants’ criminal histories — which saw blatant anti-Asian slurs go unanswered.

The council gave four critics of the bill (two of them Asian Americans) a chance to point out the obvious problems — for example, that existing tenants have an interest in not sharing a building with, say, someone who’s just done time for violent crime or theft.

Afterward, the chairwoman, Councilwoman Nantasha Williams, politely noted, “I respectfully disagree with some of the things you said.”

But then came four supporters of the bill, one of them — wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned “Vocal New York,” the name of a hard-left activist group — proceeded to call the prior testimony “garbage” and “racist,” going on to say that Asian Americans aren’t real New Yorkers.

“They don’t want black people to live in black people’s neighborhood,” he proclaimed. “It’s not their neighborhood — they from China, Hong Kong.”

At least three council members — Williams (D-Queens), Powers (D-Manhattan) and Alexa Avilés (D-B’klyn) — heard those remarks, but not one bothered to condemn them, either in the moment or after the panel finished.

No wonder Democrats are losing Asian voters.
