#Haikyu!! Movie Takes Over Japan Box Office in Debut Weekend

Just last week, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom was celebrating its 2.68 billion yen (~US$17.87 million) total gross at the Japanese box office and its status as the biggest hit of 2024’s first half. That title is now being threatened by Haikyu!!: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump, which had an attendance of 1.529 million and a haul of 2.23 billion yen (~US$14.86 million) in its debut weekend.

Haikyu!!: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump begin screening on February 16. With its opening performance, which is the best of the year so far, it replaced Seed Freedom as the top-ranking movie on the weekend box office chart (the Gundam film is now back at the 2nd spot). Other anime films in the weekend top 10 ranking are Demon Slayer: To the Hashira Training at 3rd and Spy x Family Code: White at seventh.

The Haikyu!! movie, which adapts the Spring Nationals match between Karasuno and Nekoma, is the latest Haikyu!! anime since 2020’s Haikyu!! To The Top, the fourth season of the series. Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump has Susumu Mitsunaka (director of the first three Haikyu!! seasons, co-writer of Seasons 2 and 3) on director and scriptwriting duty.

The Shueisha-published manga by Haruichi Furudate that the anime is based on was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2020. It has been collected into 45 tankoubon volumes. Viz Media describes the manga as:

After losing his first and last volleyball match against Tobio Kageyama, “the King of the Court,” Shoyo Hinata swears to become his rival after graduating middle school. But what happens when the guy he wants to defeat ends up being his teammate?!
