#Gov. Cuomo is snubbing the victims of his fatal nursing-home orders

Gov. Cuomo keeps nixing demands for an independent probe into his fatal nursing-home orders, claiming they’re political. But at a hearing Monday, survivors just wanted answers.

“The COVID crisis in New York’s nursing homes was a preventable crisis,” fumed Jerry Maldonado, whose 81-year-old mom came down with symptoms at a Rockland County home and later died. He said the director of nursing at the home told him “he had been forced to admit COVID patients into the facility by the state.”

Maldonado wasn’t alone in wondering how that could’ve happened. Some 6,400 deaths at nursing homes were linked to COVID, and families — and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle — want to know what role Cuomo’s mandate played.

That March 25 order not only required homes to accept COVID-positive patients; it even banned them from testing for it.

At a hearing last week, Cuomo’s health czar, Howard Zucker, stonewalled, refusing to answer key questions.

And Monday, the gov (yet again) tried to pretend the demands for an independent probe were just politically motivated.

“I think you’d have to be blind to think it’s not political,” he said. “Just look at where it comes from and look at the sources and look at their political affiliation.”

Yes, look at the sources: They’re Republican and Democratic officials alike — and everyday citizens who just want answers.

Cuomo’s continued resistance to a probe speaks volumes. After all, if he and his team made no mistakes, why fear one?
