#5 sports anime worth watching from the last 5 years

Animes come in numerous styles and with different stories. No wonder that they have been able to conquer more and more German hearts in recent years, because there is something here for (almost) everyone that appeals to their personal interests. Athletes and fans of certain sports are also not left out. Many anime revolve around a specific sport, for example in the case of the well-known football anime “Captain Tsubasa”.

We present the best sports anime of the last 5 years. By the way: New animes will be available on Netflix from October 2023!

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru

“Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru” (English title: “Run with the Wind”) comes from 2018/19 and is based on the novel of the same name by Shion Miura. The anime is about the student Kakeru Kurahara, who is short of money and is happy to be able to get a cheap room in a student dormitory. One day the new roommate’s move-in will be celebrated, but what he doesn’t yet know is that when he signed the room, he was automatically obliged to take part in the university’s athletics club.

The anime depicts the training of young students with all its ups and downs. It has become known and popular above all for its emotional depth and the positive portrayal of (long-distance) running.

Megalobox

Megalobox was released in 2018. It was produced by TMS Entertainment and tells the story of an underground boxer called “Junk Dog”. Megalobox is set in the future, in which boxers have exoskeletons that increase their fighting power to a new level: the so-called “Gears”. Junk Dog doesn’t have much, but he earns a modest living through his participation in the Megalobox underground fights. Nevertheless, the focus is less on the boxing matches and more on the personal development of the protagonist in his search for freedom and self-determination.

One day Junk Dog decides to take part in the spectacular “Megalonia” tournament without gears. To do this, he takes on a new identity and from now on calls himself Joe.

Ahiru no Sora

Ahiru no Sora is a basketball anime from 2019. It is about the young Sora Kurumatani, whose mother taught him everything about playing basketball. He’s actually too small for the sport, but that doesn’t change his determination to lead his high school’s basketball team to success – because that’s what he promised his mother.

But as soon as Sora arrives at his new school, he realizes that the other players are not very motivated. So Sora has a lot to do to achieve his goal…

Hanebado!

Hanebado! is dedicated to badminton – a sport that receives comparatively little attention in anime. All the more courageous that the makers of this anime dared to tackle a niche sport in 2018!

Hanebado! is about the very talented badminton player Ayano Hanesaki. Despite her talent, she initially doesn’t want to join her high school’s badminton club. The club’s strict and harsh captain further diminishes Ayano’s enthusiasm.

But her friend can persuade her because she knows that Ayano also enjoyed badminton as a child before the painful separation from her mother took away her fun. As the story progresses, Ayano finds her way back to her passion and faces great challenges and competitions.

Captain Tsubasa

The football anime Captain Tsubasa is a classic from the 1980s that almost all anime fans should know to this day. But a new edition was published in 2018, which is also recommended.

Not just watching anime

All of the anime presented are absolutely exciting to watch, and viewers really get excited, especially during the respective competitions. But the development of the protagonists between the respective competitions can also be clearly followed, especially from a psychological perspective.

Another way to make the love of sports even more exciting is sports betting. They are available for almost all sports in which professional competitions are held. These include, for example, football, tennis, basketball or even NFL Laws. Rooting for your favorite team becomes even more nerve-wracking and exciting when you know that if you win, you’ll get a big win.

Conclusion

Anime are very fascinating and inspire children, young people and adults alike. If you’re also a sports enthusiast, you can combine your passions perfectly: with sports anime.

Sports anime usually revolve around a sport – whether it’s football, basketball or running. However, their protagonists and their character development, passion for the sport and the ups and downs in training make sports anime really exciting and help athletes to personally identify with the stories.
