Big news for fans of Hayao Miyazaki — his debut series, Future Boy Conan, will be available for the first time in North America later this year!

GKIDS announced the acquisition today on their Twitter account:

GKIDS has also opened a website for the series, where you can get more information on the upcoming release and sign up for email updates.

The studio summarizes Future Boy Conan thus:

Twenty years ago, a terrible war destroyed civilization. Conan is born into this new world on an isolated island. His life is forever changed when a mysterious girl named Lana washes ashore, pursued by shadowy operatives who seek to use her to wicked ends.

The directorial debut of Academy Award®-winner Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) is a landmark in animation history. This delightful sci-fi adventure series, beloved worldwide but never before released in North America, features a new English language version and 4K digital restoration.

The 1978 series has been a beloved classic for quite some time, but got an extra burst of attention when the 2020 series Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! did a frame-by-frame recreation of scenes from it in its first episode.

We can look forward to the North American debut of Future Boy Conan sometime in late 2021.
