#Giants’ Lorenzo Carter may be done for season after serious injury

One of the Giants’ best players did not last long on the field in Sunday’s 37-34 loss to the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. And it looks like outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter could be gone for the season.

Carter injured his left Achilles tendon with 11:23 left in the first quarter. It looked to be a non-contact injury, and as he was getting carted off the field, Carter gave a thumbs-up to his teammates.

Achilles injuries are rarely anything other than long term. Losing Carter will be a huge blow to the defense, as the third-year player is one of the top pass rushers and run pursuers on the roster.

Carter’s absence forced defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to put Markus Golden on the field. Golden has struggled to get snaps with this coaching staff after recording a team-high 10 sacks in 2019. Golden had a first half sack of Dak Prescott.

The Giants are without Oshane Ximines, who is on injured reserve with a shoulder issue for at least two more games. Golden and Kyler Fackrell are the two healthy outside linebackers. Rookie Cam Brown is waiting in the wings.

The Giants received some rare good news before the game when strong safety Jabrill Peppers made it through warm-ups and was ruled active.

Peppers, who never comes off the field when healthy, missed the Week 4 loss to the Rams with an ankle injury and was limited in practice all week and listed as questionable.

Peppers did not start, though, giving way to Adrian Colbert. Peppers was relieved of his punt-return duties by Golden Tate, to protect his ankle from excessive wear and tear.

FB Eli Penny, seldom-used on offense, got his first rushing attempt of the season late in the first quarter. He gained 2 yards on third-and-1 to keep alive a drive that ended with a field goal.

Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett exchanged a group hug on the field during warm-ups with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and general manager Stephen Jones. Garrett also exchanged pleasantries with Prescott. Garrett was Cowboys head coach from 2011-19 before his contract was not renewed after last season. The good vibes dissipated when Garrett ran out onto the field and “Intruder Alert’’ was shown on the video screens.

Most of the Cowboys’ bulldozing offensive line did not make it to the field, with three of their starters — Tyron Smith, Joe Looney and La’el Collins — out with injuries. They were replaced by Brandon Knight at left tackle, Tyler Biadasz at center and Terence Steele at right tackle. Knight and Steele are undrafted free agents.

LB Blake Martinez entered Week 5 with 43 tackles, tying him with Zach Cunningham of the Texans for second in the NFL behind the Vikings’ Eric Kendricks. … Giants inactives: LB T.J. Brunson, OL Jackson Barton, TE Eric Tomlinson and DL RJ McIntosh.
