#Giants linebacker T.J. Brunson out for season with torn ACL

Second-year linebacker T.J. Brunson suffered a season-ending torn ACL only a few minutes after forcing a fumble in the Giants’ preseason loss to the Jets at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.

Veteran S Josh Kalu suffered a torn pectoral muscle. Third-string QB Clayton Thorson appeared to suffer a head/neck injury on the final offensive play, and underwent medical exams on Sunday.

The Giants signed quarterback Brian Lewerke, according to his agent, Mike McCartney. That’s a strong indication that third-stringer Thorson, will miss time. It is difficult for teams to get through a training camp practice without overtaxing just two quarterbacks.

“Hopefully it all comes out for the best,” Joe Judge said after the game. “He’s been working hard for us. If there’s an injury at quarterback, we’ll look to bring in an additional player to help us go ahead and function for the remainder of training camp or however long someone’s out.”

Aside from the kickers, long snappers and punter, LB Cam Brown was the only Giant who played on special teams (13 snaps) but not offense or defense. The 6-foot-5, 233-pounder is abnormally large for a gunner on punts.

“The focus for him was going to be to play special teams,” Judge said. “He did a good job for us. I saw what I needed to see. In terms of defense, we had some other guys we wanted to evaluate who have been doing a good job for us in practice. Him not playing really doesn’t reflect specifically anything on his status defensively.”

LB Blake Martinez was not on the sideline with other rested starters because of a non-football medical issue. He rejoined the team Sunday.

“We just wanted to get him away from our players and just make sure everything is good before having him in the building,” Judge said. “If it was a regular-season game, he would’ve been able to go ahead and tough on through it. We just wanted to make sure he had time to rest.”
