#Ghost of Tsushima Fans Push Restoration of Ancient Shrine Gate Far Beyond Crowdfunding Goal

Ghost of Tsushima

Back in September 2020, a typhoon caused severe damage to a Torii gate belonging to the ancient Watatsumi Shrine in Tsushima, Japan. In an effort to restore the gate, a crowdfunding campaign launched on Campfire on November 27, and it ended up going way past its goal thanks in no small part to some generous fans of Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima.

The goal of 5 million yen was initially met back on December 1, but the campaign ran until January 10. At the time of its closing, the campaign to restore the shrine's Torii gate pulled in an impressive ¥27,103,882 (about $260,435), skyrocketing the total to 500 percent of the base goal.

With the crowdfunding at an end, the budget for restoration will be finalized by March of this year. From there, restoration will kick off sometime in April with the goal of completing the project by August. Backers who donated at least ¥10,000 will have their names listed on the back of a stone monument, which—with notes that the ongoing pandemic could delay any part of this project—will hopefully be erected within this fiscal year.

If you ever get a chance to visit yourself, you'll find the Watatsumi Shrine in Tsushima's Toyotama region. Considering how lovingly rendered Ghost of Tsushima's environments are, it's no surprise that its fans have become so enthusiastic about the beauty and history of Tsushima itself.
