Gangsta Boo has reportedly died in her hometown of Memphis. Details about the circumstances are scarce, but the news has seemingly been confirmed by DJ Paul.

According to local news affiliate Fox 13 Memphis, the Queen of Memphis, born Lola Mitchell, was found dead around 4:00 p.m. local time on Sunday afternoon (January 1).

As news of the Memphis Rap pioneer’s death began spreading via social media, DJ Paul posted a photo of his former Three 6 Mafia group mate, which many took as confirmation of her death.

Gangsta Boo was 43 years old.

Several members of the Hip Hop community, including 2Chainz, B-Real, Lil Jon and fellow Memphis artist Duke Deuce shared their disbelief and condolences in the post’s comments section.

HipHopDX has reached out to Gangsta Boo and DJ Paul representatives, as well as the Memphis Police Department for additional information on this developing story.

Joining the group in 1994 at the tender age of 15, Gangsta Boo made her name alongside the Grammy Award winning group Three 6 Mafia. Following the release of her debut solo album Enquiring Minds in 1998, she became a household name across the South and beyond, thanks to the hit single “Where Dem Dollas At!?”

After leaving Three 6 Mafia over alleged financial disputes in 2002, Gangsta Boo was quiet on the music front for a number of years, before returning with a number of scattered singles starting in 2017. Her run had been much more consistent of late, with the past four years seeing the “Yeah Hoe” rapper release no less than three singles each year.

In addition to returning to her own solo releases, Gangsta Boo has also made a number of guest appearances over the past few years, most recently appearing on Latto’s “F.T.C.U.” alongside Memphis newcomer Glorilla.

“Latto has been showing me support for a while. I always see her mentioning my name when they ask her who were some of her inspirations, and when she talked about her dad, she told me that her dad used to support a lot of female rappers and I was one of them. So, that’s kind of how it came about. We just started following each other on the Internet and supporting each other and s—. And yeah, she hit me up last minute. She was like, “Man, I smoked a blunt and had a genius idea.”

Gangsta Boo added: “She’s like, ‘The song already done, we already did the video and s— but I want you to be on the outro, the intro or some sort of adlibs.’ I was like, ‘Of course, Latto. I got you, man.’ It was simple just like that. Of course, I would’ve wanted to spit and kill on that mother — but just anytime I can contribute and support any female rapper that I like, that like me back, I’m always down for it.”

HipHopDX extends its condolences to Gangsta Boo’s loved ones.
