Anime

Dataset

From Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These – Collision's debut on March 18 to the data collection cutoff point on June 24, 439 episodes across 39 unique titles were launched on Crunchyroll. If you tried to watch them all in one go (yes, OPs and EDs included!), it would take 162 hours, 44 minutes and 44 seconds.

On the production end, five studios produced multiple titles and eight were collaborative productions, while three directors made their full directorial debut.

Ignoring sequel buffers, Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs tops the list of the longest Spring 2022 titles at 67 characters in length.

Sequel suffix creativity peaked with Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It's "r=1-sinθ," a graphical formula that creates a heart shape. It truly was the season of "Love", since four other anime also had the word in their title. Or, perhaps even more oddly, two "Healer" anime!

Calendar

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Calendar

* Dates according to individual episode pages

Saturday morning cartoons were bigger and better than ever, thanks to ten new episodes every Saturday morning that were then followed by nine on Sunday, which occasionally flickered due to delays. Wednesdays offered some midweek respite with six new episodes, making up for a completely empty Monday.

Time Waited

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Time Waited Adaptation

If you thought waiting days or a full week for episodes was agonizing enough, there was a whole decade between when Love All Play and Tomodachi Game were first published and when the first episode of their anime adaptation premiered. Down the other end, A Couple of Cuckoos is continuing into a second cour despite the manga only being in print since January 2020!

As for waiting on sequels…

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Time Waited Sequel

For fans of preexisting anime, the longest wait was just three years for Date A Live IV and The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2, while nearly half of sequels were only a year or less of wait time — which certainly pales in comparison to the long-awaited return of The Devil is a Part-Timer! in Summer 2022.

Type

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Anime Type

Of the 14 sequels, seven were either a second season or second part, four were a third and three were a fourth!

Source

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Anime Source

Precedents for "Source: Other" include everything from live-action films to international comics. In Spring 2022, there was the charming Heroines Run the Show, which was based on a song. The equally rare "Source: Anime" also showed up for KAGINADO Season 2, which brought together a cavalcade of characters from anime adaptations of Key's visual novels and original projects (such as Angel Beats).

Setting

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Anime Setting

In my 2021 Year in Review piece on Funimation, there was an amusing crossover under "When Did They Take Place?" between Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song and AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline, which were both initially set in the year 2061. Now, in 2022, Part 2 of the latter intersects with Date A Live IV in featuring Eurasia as an area.

Theme Songs

Dataset

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Theme Songs Dataset

The superstar artist of the season was Sora Amamiya, who performed three theme songs with all-female group TrySail (Aharen-san wa Hakarenai, Magia Record) and two as a solo artist (Heroines Run the Show, Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It r=1-sinθ).

A total of twelve theme songs, evenly split between opening and ending, were a full anime debut for the artist, joined by ten with a mixed group.

Openings

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Opening Theme Songs

Two out of three "Solo Male" opening themes were anime debuts, with the most notable inclusion of PelleK, a longtime anime cover artist who performed an original song for Skeleton Knight in Another World!

Endings

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Ending Theme Songs

+1 Instrumental (missing credit)

It's hard to come close to the sheer boost from In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki, a show about an isolated village of female ninja teams, having a version of its ending theme performed by three different cast members each episode. However, as shown by the disparity between the adjacent bars, only four of the twelve songs had at least one member performing their first anime theme song.

Cast & Characters

Dataset

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Cast Dataset

Designating a protagonist can be unfortunately subjective, so I mostly stuck to who was listed first in the anime's credits; three anime had no distinct single protagonist (e.g. KAGINADO Season 2).

As for voice actors, some quick definitions to make sure they're clear:

  • Credits: An individual listing in an episode's end-credits.
  • Role: An individual part in an anime.

I could've cheated my way over the desired 7,000-credit mark by including episodes outside the aforementioned window, but I wanted to memorialize the chuckle I got when I put in the last few credits and checked the row count. Given the high amount and how they were transcribed manually, factor in little margin for error.

Protagonists

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Cast Protagonists

If you're a human teenager with brown hair and brown eyes, then congratulations, you might just be an anime protagonist! But if you're a baby ghost or silver-haired elf, there's still a chance you fit that category.

Voice Actors

Crunchyroll Spring 2022 Analysis Voice Actors

To further define the earlier definitions: More roles but fewer credits generally means the voice actor plays a lot of fill-in parts, while the reverse generally means they played central characters. Tetsu Inada is a particularly interesting case, since he appeared in the second-most amount of anime in Spring 2022, yet each role was no more than four appearances.

As for the graph leaders, which demonstrate the different ways one can measure a voice actor's presence in a season, Rina Hidaka had 52 credits from eight roles across seven anime, while Shinya Takahashi had 20 credits from 16 roles across nine anime. Deep in the rest of the pack, 395 voice actors, or nearly a third, had just one credit, role and anime. The next highest combo — two credits from one role in one anime — classified 90 voice actors.

There's a lot of cool stuff that can be unpacked from the dataset, but I've bored you enough already, so here are a few random tidbits that I thought were super fun to round this out:

  • Anna Mugiho voiced a white cat in Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club and a black cat in Heroines Run the Show — two idol-based shows
  • Natsuki Hanae's cat Konpei was in the cast for Love All Play
  • SPY x FAMILY had the most extensive multi-roling of any Spring 2022 show, with eight voice actors taking on 6+ parts identities
    • e.g. Motoki Sakuma played Bondman's Commander, Chief Aquarist, Eden College Maths Teacher, Politician, Rehabilitation Patient and Vice Minister of Finance
  • Eight shows had a narrator
  • Four shows had a main character named "Yu" (and eight had a "Yui" variety)
  • 19 characters had a young version of themselves appear
  • Maria Naganawa played eight different roles in one episode of ESTAB LIFE: Great Escape
  • In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki had a "???" role, while Love After World Domination had a "???" voice actor
  • Hiroshi Shirokuma, who played Riz in Beastars, played a bear again in Don't Hurt Me, My Healer! ("Shirokuma" is the same as the word for "polar bear")
  • There were 61 "Male Student" credits and 101 "Female Student" credits
  • There were 22 "Boy" credits and 36 "Girl" credits
  • There were 29 "Father" and 58 "Mother" credits

And so on…
