#Family of beheaded journalist Daniel Pearl to appeal killers’ release

The family of Daniel Pearl, a US journalist who was kidnapped and beheaded in Pakistan in 2002, is fighting to keep the men charged with killing him in jail.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court tossed the Islamists’ murder convictions on Thursday, and the men were ordered freed.

The Pearl family “intends to file a review petition against the illegal and unjust majority decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan,” the family’s lawyer, Faisal Siddiqui, said in a statement issued Saturday night.

Pearl disappeared in January 2002 while investigating “shoe-bomber” Richard Reid for the Wall Street Journal. A gruesome video of his beheading was delivered to the US. Consulate in Karachi.

The US announced its intent to take custody of one of Pearl’s alleged killers, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, following the decision.

Sheikh has been on death row for nearly two decades, but has maintained his innocence.

“Today’s decision is a complete travesty of justice and the release of these killers puts in danger journalists everywhere and the people of Pakistan,” Pearl’s family said in a statement following the Thursday decision.
