Evangelion ANIMA is a light novel series based on the premise of the Human Instrumentality Project not occurring and takes place three years after the TV anime. Seven Seas Entertainment, which publishes the series under the title of Neon Genesis Evangelion ANIMA, describes it as:

What if reluctant hero Ikari Shinji had saved the world? Now, at seventeen years old, he is the de facto leader of the EVA team. Under the leadership of Commander Katsuragi Misato, the Evangelion suits have been updated with advanced designs and abilities in preparation for the possible return of the monstrous Angels. Four copies of Ayanami Rei are tasked with operating a global anti-Angel search-and-destroy program. But when one of these clones goes rogue, only Shinji can stop her.

Yamashita is the author of the light novels and shares planning and draft credits with editor Yasuo Kashihara. The story was originally published in serialized format, and five volumes were later released between 2017 and 2019. The concept has also inspired a visual book and figures.

Yamashita was co-mechanical designer on Neon Genesis Evangelion and main mechanical designer for the Rebuild movies. He is also the mechanical designer for the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
