#EU ambassadors reportedly see ‘no objections’ to Brexit deal

European Union ambassadors on Friday raised “no objections” to a Brexit deal with the UK — with the British parliament expected to approve it in the coming days, according to reports.

The ambassadors’ endorsement and a UK approval would pave the way for EU parliaments to legally approve the agreement, the AP reported Friday.

The announcement came after an unprecedented Christmas Day meeting, according to a report by Politico.

“The provisional application aims to prevent a significant disruption in EU-UK relations with severe consequences for citizens & businesses at the end of the transition period January, 1st,” Union spokesman Sebastian Fischer said on Twitter after the meeting.

“The letter to the @Europarl_EN lays out the necessity of this exceptional step,” Fischer wrote.

Britain on Thursday reached a separation deal with the European Union after more than for years of tense negotiations, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced.

The Brits voted to leave the 27-member union during a June 2016 referendum.

A Brexit agreement would allow the two sides to continue to exchange trade goods free of tariffs or quotas after the UK officials breaks away Jan. 1.

The ambassadors’ approval would help ensure a smoother transition until legislators take up the question of whether to legally approve the deal, which is unlikely to happen before next month, AP said.
