#Elizabeth Glazer, architect of de Blasio’s push to close Rikers Island, to resign

The director of the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, Elizabeth Glazer, is leaving her post by the end of the month, sources told The Post.

A senior criminal justice policy advisor to Mayor Bill de Blasio, Glazer is perhaps best known for spearheading the administration’s sweeping, and controversial, plan to close Rikers Island.

Glazer was described by City Hall insiders as an effective mediator on often-contentious criminal justice issues between the mayor’s office, the NYPD and city district attorneys.

“It’s a real loss,” one source said of Glazer’s departure, of which the senior official gave no specific reason for. “Without her, there is very little rapport with the DAs.”

A source said Glazer was left in an awkward position earlier this year when her staff penned a letter opposing the mayor’s initial handling of city protests against police brutality spurred by the death of George Floyd.

But the results of the move by her staff does not appear to be a reason, at least not publicly, for her pending resignation.

“She’s been here since the beginning. I think it’s time to move on to something new,” another source said.

Before arriving in the de Blasio administration, Glazer worked as the Secretary for Public Safety to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University before graduating from Columbia Law School.
