Chad Daybell entered the not guilty pleas to two felony counts of concealment of evidence Friday after the bodies of Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 17, were uncovered on his property in Rexburg, Idaho, the Deseret News reported.
Police discovered the two sets of human remains last week after issuing a warrant at the home of Daybell, who married Vallow a few weeks after the children were last seen in September.
“It is not the outcome we had hoped; to be able to find the children safe,” the Rexburg police statement said.
The couple — known to be part of the doomsday cult Preparing a People that works to “help prepare the people of this earth for the second coming of Jesus Christ” — has been accused of lying to and not cooperating with police during the months-long investigation.
Vallow was arrested in February after failing to notify authorities of the whereabouts of her children — and has since been charged with child abandonment.
Meanwhile, Daybell was taken into custody upon the discovery of the remains, and remains held on $1 million bail, according to the report.
If convicted, Daybell could face up to five years in jail and a $1,000 fine, the outlet reported.
It’s likely, however, that Daybell and his wife will face additional charges in connection with the deaths of the children, the East Idaho News reported.
