When it comes to plastic surgery, less is definitely more — unless you want to end up looking like a celebrity in all the wrong ways.

Some superstars such as Chrissy Teigen and Madonna, who are often accused of getting aggressive work done by the Twitterverse, are becoming cautionary tales. Experts warn that some trendy procedures — which often start off subtle but add up — can do more harm than good, and (gasp!) even make you look worse.

Teigen recently revealed on Instagram that she underwent a cosmetic surgical procedure to have fat removed from her cheeks called buccal fat removal. However, experts warn that this procedure — and others that have spiked in popularity — might have disastrous side effects down the line, most notably accelerated aging.

The Post looks at four examples of possibly dubious procedures and what could have been done instead.

Buccal fat removal

“I did that Dr. Diamond buccal fat removal thing here,” Teigen said, pointing to her cheeks, and captioning the clip, “no shame in my dr diamond game.”

Dr. Jason Diamond is best known for appearing on E!’s “Dr. 90210,” as well as Netflix’s “Celebrity Plastic Surgeons.” Other celeb patients include Kim Kardashian, Kate Upton and Katy Perry.

The outspoken Teigen, 35, who’s a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girl, has been catching shade from some doctor detractors. Dr. Tijion Esho, a cosmetic doctor who appears on BBC Morning Live, tweeted that this procedure will “rapidly … age her.”

“The main issue from photos was her over treated jaw,” the UK-based physician stated. “I would have removed her jaw line filler and used Botox to the masseters for better effect and reassessed from there.”

Even armchair critics are warning against the procedure aging someone in the future.

“This is gonna make her age so much faster and she didn’t even Need it in the first place,” tweeted a random follower named Nicole.

Unsurprisingly, plastic surgeons often advise against the well-known surgery.

“Buccal fat removal is an old procedure. It’s not that it’s a bad procedure, but as people get older, and women specifically, the buccal fat atrophies,” Dr. Lawrence Reed, a plastic surgeon on the Upper East Side, told The Post of the procedure, which can cost between $8,000 and $12,000. “They have sunken holes outside of the corners of their mouths as they get older. That’s where the buccal fat was, and it disappears with age. You look cadaveric.”

Dr. Reed understood why Teigen would gravitate toward the surgery with her “round” face, but he steers clients away from it as a solution.

“I discourage people with lean faces from doing it because they’re going to look better now, but you’re going to look worse when you get older,” said Dr. Reed. “I talk them out of doing it. I’d never do it on an older person because they’re going to lose the fat anyhow.”

There are less invasive ways to get sculpted cheeks, he says. “They can get that look with makeup today. I’d rather add to the cheekbone [through fillers] than take out the buccal fat,” said Dr. Reed.

Fillers to reshape the jawline

“Like a Virgin” singer Madonna, 63, is reportedly no plastic surgery virgin with her ever-changing looks. Madge appeared on the cover of a 2008 New York Magazine cover story entitled “The New New Face” when her look was thoroughly admired. Though she’s never admitted to having jaw fillers, speculation abounds.

The “Material Girl,” who stunned at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12, has gone too far. “It’s unnatural, squarish and mannish. Instead of making it flush, they overfilled it,” said Dr. Reed of Madonna’s look. “The chin to the jawbone should be a smooth transition — they added too much. This is a case of injections gone bad. It’s not going to kill her, but does she look normal with those puffs? This looks bizarre — she looks jowly and puffed out.”

Looking like they have ‘lantern jaws

“The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” have caught flak for looking overdone, with some critics calling out their highly sculpted looks. But when in Rome… “RHOSLC” star Jen Shah noted that Utah is one of the top US states when it comes to plastic surgeons per capita.

Shah told Page Six Style last year that she wished people would drop the pretense about plastic surgery purity and pony up — if only to get a recommendation of a trusted and certified doctor.

“I wish people would be more open, because I just want to know where to go,” Shah lamented. “Save me 10 bad Botox jobs. Just tell me where to go … ‘Hey, you want an eyebrow lift? You want Botox? You want your lips injected? Here’s where you go.’ I wish somebody would tell me that, because I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t wake up like this.”

Meanwhile, a thriving Reddit thread has been dedicated to dissecting suspected “chin injections” that leave some of the “RHOSLC” stars looking like they have “lantern jaws.”

Brazilian butt lifts

Though she’s repeatedly denied getting a Brazilian butt lift, speculation still swirls around Kim Kardashian’s bodacious booty. And the Twitterati can’t help themselves from weighing in on Kim’s curves.

“There’s nothing wrong with plastic surgery but the Kardashian/Jenners really normalized fat transfers/Brazilian butt lifts which is the most deadly procedure in cosmetic surgery, not to mention it just … doesn’t look good,” sniped LIL BITCH on Twitter.

The procedure takes fat from some place in the body, like the hips, and injects into the buttocks to make it fuller. (BTW: Madonna has responded to rumors she had butt implants.)

recent survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that the number of butt lifts performed globally has grown by 77.6%, making it the fastest-growing cosmetic surgery in the world.

“It came from Brazil, and their original technique had associated risk that was significant. There were deaths from fat going into the lungs, or death from fat traveling through blood vessels,” said Dr. Reed, adding that the deeper the injection, the greater the chance of getting into a vessel. “The operation was somewhat condemned. But as the technique changed, and it’s now done superficial, not deep, the complication rate is much lower. Those complications are far less prevalent today.”

Reed warned that although the nature of the procedure has greatly improved in the past five years, nonmedical doctors may use everything from fat to wax and paraffins.

“In inexperienced hands, the risk is higher,” he says. “If you inject deep, you’ve got a problem.”
